Marine biologists discover 28 new deep sea species--and an old VHS tape

Popular Science

ROV pilots filmed this glass squid while exploring the Colorado-Rawson submarine canyon off the coast of Argentina. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. The marine biologists of the Schmidt Ocean Institute are a busy bunch. Over the last few years, scientists aboard the research vessel have spotted rare Antarctic squid, discovered multiple octopus near Costa Rica, and even cataloged over 100 potential new species off the coast of Chile. To kick off 2026, the Institute released a trove of new images and videos highlighting some of their latest observations from the south Atlantic Ocean.

Popular Science

A recent Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition off the coast of Uruguay discovered at least 30 suspected new species and explored a sunken warship. An octopus moves around deep-sea corals at 1,612 meters (about 5,288 feet) during a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, dive near the historic HMS'Challenger's' oceanographic station 320, where the country's first coral samples were collected almost 150 years ago. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. An expedition led by a team of scientists from Uruguay discovered that the South American nation's deep-sea coral reefs are thriving and teeming with life. The reefs are primarily home to numerous species that were recently listed as vulnerable to extinction.

Back Home: A Machine Learning Approach to Seashell Classification and Ecosystem Restoration

Valverde, Alexander, Solano, Luis

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

In Costa Rica, an average of 5 tons of seashells are extracted from ecosystems annually. Confiscated seashells, cannot be returned to their ecosystems due to the lack of origin recognition. To address this issue, we developed a convolutional neural network (CNN) specifically for seashell identification. We built a dataset from scratch, consisting of approximately 19000 images from the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Using this dataset, the model achieved a classification accuracy exceeding 85%. The model has been integrated into a user-friendly application, which has classified over 36,000 seashells to date, delivering real-time results within 3 seconds per image. To further enhance the system's accuracy, an anomaly detection mechanism was incorporated to filter out irrelevant or anomalous inputs, ensuring only valid seashell images are processed.

Are killer robots the future of war?

Al Jazeera

Humanity stands on the brink of a new era of warfare. Driven by rapid developments in artificial intelligence, weapons platforms that can identify, target and decide to kill human beings on their own -- without an officer directing an attack or a soldier pulling the trigger -- are fast transforming the future of conflict. Officially, they are called lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), but critics call them killer robots. Many countries, including the United States, China, the United Kingdom, India, Iran, Israel, South Korea, Russia and Turkey, have invested heavily in developing such weapons in recent years. A United Nations report suggests that Turkish-made Kargu-2 drones in fully-automatic mode marked the dawn of this new age when they attacked combatants in Libya in 2020 amid that country's ongoing conflict. Autonomous drones have also played a crucial role in the war in Ukraine, where both Moscow and Kyiv have deployed these uncrewed weapons to target enemy soldiers and infrastructure.

Fuzzy Clustering by Hyperbolic Smoothing

Masis, David, Segura, Esteban, Trejos, Javier, Xavier, Adilson

arXiv.org Machine Learning

We propose a novel method for building fuzzy clusters of large data sets, using a smoothing numerical approach. The usual sum-of-squares criterion is relaxed so the search for good fuzzy partitions is made on a continuous space, rather than a combinatorial space as in classical methods \cite{Hartigan}. The smoothing allows a conversion from a strongly non-differentiable problem into differentiable subproblems of optimization without constraints of low dimension, by using a differentiable function of infinite class. For the implementation of the algorithm we used the statistical software $R$ and the results obtained were compared to the traditional fuzzy $C$--means method, proposed by Bezdek.

Council Post: How We Can Use AI To Help Achieve Sustainability Goals

#artificialintelligence

As with many of us, after three years of staying home, I realized a few months ago that I'd had it with the pandemic. Having traveled up to 70% for years before Covid-19, my initial reaction to being in the same time zone and same building and bed was pure gratitude, even bliss. I wanted to go out and experience the world again. During our last Omicron-initiated staycation over the Christmas holidays, my 14-year-old son stated in his very polished, diplomatic and convincing style that he was bored. As soon as we learned Omicron was manageable, and there would be a break from lockdowns and fewer travel restrictions, we decided to get on with it and book some memorable holidays. So came the trips to Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
